Pixies fans were surprised with bass player Kim Deal left the band, and then it was another unexpected twist when Deal's replacement, Kim Shattuck was fired, much to her dismay. Now the legendary band has welcomed Paz Lenchantin, but it seems like the attempt to replace Deal has been a difficult one.
In an interview with Brooklyn Vegan, Pixies drummer David Lovering shared what the process has been like for them. "When we were in the lurch when Kim Deal left it was a tough decision," said Lovering. "Basically, no-one can replace Kim Deal. It would be impossible to do."
Lenchantin has proven herself has a qualified bassist after working with Zwan and A Perfect Circle, and Lovering agrees. He stated that the musician is "just wonderful." He said, "She's gonna take over for the next portion of it. It's just what we've been doing and hopefully it'll be good."
Not only do Lenchantin's musical abilities provide reason for her joining the group, apparently it's very important for the band's dynamic that their bass player be a woman.
"We definitely want someone who can just be a personality, I think, and especially on the feminine side. Just the same formula that we've used. I think if we had a guy up there, it wouldn't be the same," he explained. "We couldn't pull off the Pixies thing. It'd be a little too masculine. The feminine side gives it that Yin and Yang. Like I said, no-one will be able to replace Kim Deal. It's impossible, but we're doing the best we can with it."
Lenchantin will hit the stage with the Pixies in London at Field Day later in the year. Looks like she might be the one to stick around, at least for a while.
