Red Bull Music Academy is releasing a new documentary and book to celebrate its 15th anniversary, according to SPIN. The documentary, What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music, "explores the challenges that a life in music can bring," the RBMA website explains. It "delves deeply into the many challenges, stages of development and triumphs that musicians experience ... [and] it seeks to go beyond just music, and ask questions about life itself."
Director Ralf Schmerberg filmed testimonials from industry experts including James Murphy, Nile Rodgers, Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, Rakim, Flying Lotus, Debbie Harry, Phillip Glass and Thundercat. The film hits theaters in select cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit, on February 17. But if you aren't able to make the showings in those cities, the documentary will become available online the next day for free.
The 15th anniversary book, called For the Record: Conversations With People Who Have Shaped the Way We Listen to Music, is available now through Gestalten. Spanning 400 pages, the hardcover records conversations between several notable artists as they talk about work in the industry. It also includes a number of essays written by music journalists.
