In a commentary submitted to Rolling Stone, Yoko Ono, the second wife of the Beatles' John Lennon, shared her thoughts on the death of Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon's first wife.
Ono explained that Cynthia was a "Hoylake girl" that meant she was from a place considered to be a "notch above" where the members of the Beatles all came from. Yono described Cynthia as a straight-A student in art school, where she met John, with a michevious smile.
"Indeed, one could not help noticing Cynthia's zest for life, and the beam of sunshine coming out of her eyes. She already embodied love and peace in her quiet manner. The "boys" as they were called forever, behaved differently when she was in the room. I wonder how much her presence encouraged the group to go all the way to the top," Ono added.
Ono shared her connection to Cynthia, of having a "mom-and-son boy." Cynthia left behind son Julian Lennon and Ono's son is named Sean Lennon.
She described the relationship between her and Cynthia and their sons as "family".
"It seems like only yesterday, when we four met, Cynthia, Julian, Sean and me," Ono said. "I thought she was looking like a young girl with strong love and pride for her son, Julian, who managed to have his photo exhibition in New York City, known for being a difficult place for artists to be successful. We were a family."
The NY Times reported that Cynthia once chronicled her troubled marriage with John in two memoirs. The couple married in 1962 and had their son in 1963. They divorced in 1968.
Cynthia was most recently married to Noel Charles who passed in 2013. She died of cancer at age 75 in her home in Spain.
Ono concluded, "Please join me in giving love and support to Julian at this very trying time for him. Thank you."
