We reported, months ago it seems, that Garth Brooks was planning something huge, and that it wasn't related to his previously confirmed comeback tour. Brooks referred to the project as "the biggest thing I've ever tried to attempt." It would seem, based on the performer's announcement Monday, that the mystery project will be a pair of shows at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. We were hoping was building a Death Star, but we'll take it.
"Bob Doyle, my long-term manager, was talking about our recent Vegas shows and he said, 'if you are going to make a comeback, you've got to do a special. Something that is huge,'" Brooks said at a press conference in Dublin. "We said Dublin, Ireland, Croke Park in a fully reconstructed stadium. I said that totally joking, but we started to get into it."
The event is a throwback to Brooks' last shows in Ireland, held during 1997. The stadium was currently undergoing a renovation at that point, but Brooks claimed during his conference that 130,000 were in attendance (the stadium seats 82,300, but that's not counting general admission fans who were down on the field). The 1997 event was released as a home video and included in Brooks 2006 DVD collection The Entertainer.
The country star was sure to point out that the pair of concerts being held at Croke Park are not technically part of his forthcoming "comeback tour." Dates and venues for that run have yet to be announced, but they'll take place in autumn following the Croke show, according to Brooks. If you happen to be in Dublin on July 25 and 26, then tickets will go on sale January 30, starting at €65.45 ($88.77).
