Chris Hansen, former reporter for Dateline, is launching a Kickstarter to raise money for a To Catch a Predator revival--Hansen vs. Predator.
The Kickstarter aspires to raise approximately $400,000 and will go live on Wednesday, April 15. If funded, the show would begin as a web series before attempting to sell it to a television network.
"There is a pent-up demand from viewers for another investigation," Hansen said, according to the L.A. Times. "And from a technology standpoint, the landscape has really changed since we did the last one."
2004 marked the beginning of To Catch a Predator, a show that set-up prowling men searching the Internet for underage partners. They'd be invited to a house where they thought they would be meeting a young girl and welcomed with the famous catch phrase, "Have a seat." Soon, they would be arrested by local police. Hansen worked closely with civilian watchdog group, Perverted Justice, on the show.
The last episode aired in December of 2007 and although it was wildly successful, there was some controversy. While some praised the show for outing online prowlers, other saw it as unfair entrapment. One predator killed himself as a result of being exposed, reports Rolling Stone.
"When we did it before, there were chat rooms on AOL and Yahoo. Now there are 22 ways to communicate online," said Hansen.
There will be incentives in place for those who donate to the Kickstarter--mugs, shirts and even private screenings of the show will be available. For a price of $150, Hansen will provide an outgoing voice message for donors' cellphones.
