Modern Germany has been known for its affinity for techno. As the wall was coming down and communism receded from Eastern Europe, Berliners were united after 24 years of separation and techno helped spur this along. Now the country is getting its own techno museum in Frankfurt. Industrial DJ Andreas Tomalla, known professionally as TALLA 2XLC, is setting up the new cultural center dubbed The Museum of Modern Electronic Music (MOMEM). Tomalia is often credited with inventing the word techno according to Dazed, though the sound came from the Belleville Three (Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins) and helped start some of the first parties in city during the 1980s. He hopes to open the museum doors in 2017 on the premises of the city's Childrens Museum and is only using private funding.
According to Deutsche Welle, the museum will include workshops for budding DJs and will host live events to bring what they are teaching you to life. It will focus on the sensory experience that clubbing offers and provide an insight into the impact that electronic music has had on 20th and 21st century culture.
The website outlines the floor plans for the building, which will have different areas for topics like instruments technology, clothing and the global movement of electronic music.
The city of Frankfurt has done their part by leasing the space to the MOMEM founders for free. Techno has been woven into the fabric of the city for over three decades. Tomalia opened the first nightclub that played primarily electronic music named Technoclub in 1984.
MOMEM would be the second of its kind after EXHIBIT 3000 in Detroit that is housed inside the label distributor Submerge.
