In light of the remix to Kap G's "La Policia" featuring T.I and David Banner, Kap G and T.I. joined Don Lemon for an interview on CNN to discuss a strained relationship between police and minorities.
T.I. kicked off the conversation sharing his personal experiences with the police.
"I mean, I think there's been a blatant disregard in all underserved areas of society when it comes to interactions with law enforcement. I think there's a resentment, an undeniable fear that I believe law enforcement has for young minorities and it is reflected in their actions."
T.I later explained that these actions are sure to lead to angry lyrics in music. He suggests that angry lyrics won't change until real life actions of law enforcement do first.
Some of the lyrics of "La Policia" T.I was referring to include phrases, "You see the cops pull me over, the cops pull me over..." and "I can't breathe".
AllHipHop reported a note from Kap G in addition to the remixed version of "La Policia" saying,
"I wrote this song two years ago, out of frustration from being pulled over for no reason after leaving a studio session," Kap G said according to AllHiphop. "I didn't think much about who would hear this song when I recorded it, I just knew that this feeling was too painful and demeaning to not speak on it. I felt, as a young Mexican American writer, artist, and youngin, that it was my responsibility to give a voice to this feeling that sooo many young minorities were dealing with."
In the interview with Lemon, Kap G touched on the incident that he described in the AllHipHop report but declared that this does not mean he's necessarily afraid of police. Instead, he believes the treatment of minorities, in particular, is not fair.
