All the hip kids are already lashing out at Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for their four-trophy night at The Grammys. The most popular argument is that Kendrick Lamar didn't win an award, and Macklemore won four, so therefore it's Macklemore's fault that Lamar didn't win a Grammy. Blaming the Seattle rapper for the decisions of the Grammy committee seems unfair, but Macklemore seems to agree with the logic. Or at least he sent a text message to Lamar apologizing for the results.
"You got robbed," he wrote. "I wanted you to win. You should have. It's weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech then the music started playing during my speech and I froze."
His album with Ryan Lewis, The Heist, beat Lamar's Good Kid m.a.a.d. City for Best Rap Album, and his single "Thrift Shop" beat out Lamar's "Swimming Pools (Drank)" for Best Rap Performance. The latter rapper was also up for Album of The Year against Macklemore & Lewis, but both ended up losing to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories. Lamar and Mary J. Blige lost the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration trophy to Jay Z and Justin Timberlake.
If anything good can be taken from the awards ceremony for Lamar, he's generated even more attention for himself in his preferred method: actually rapping. General consensus is that the rapper's collaboration with rockers Imagine Dragons was the best live performance of the night. Macklemore's elaborate "One Love" performance with Queen Latifah and Madonna was good, but nothing on the night matched the intensity of Lamar and Imagine Dragons.
Plus, the no-Grammy slight gives Lamar enough fuel to keep the fire burning at least until next year's Grammys.
