Although most critics (really most people in general) had placed their bets on Kendrick Lamar to win Album of the Year or at the very least one Grammy out of his seven nominations, the Grammys voting committee thought otherwise and mostly favored Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for everything.
Macklemore posted a text he sent to Lamar which said that Lamar was the one who deserved to win the Best Rap Album award. "You got robbed. I wanted you to win," he wrote. Posting the text to Instagram kind of took away from the sincerity of it, but we digress.
Lamar spoke to XXL about the losing to the Seattle duo saying, "It's well deserved; he did what he did, man... He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that's how it go."
When asked if he thought the Grammys still undervalued hip-hop he responded, "I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre. We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it's music as a whole, it's not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that's how it goes. And we are a part of that."
Now that TDE's Isaiah Rashad has dropped his EP Cilvia and ScHoolboy Q is releasing his debut album Oxymoron February 25, XXL asked if Kendrick was next in line to drop a record. "I wouldn't even know. I got to get back into the studio and vibe out. But once I get in there, for sure, I'll let y'all know."
