Nate Ruess 'Great Big Storm' Review: Bombastic 'Grand Romantic' Single Masks Sad Lyricism

Nate Ruess: fun. frontman

Falling in line with the previous samplings we've gotten from Grand Romantic, "Great Big Storm" follows Ruess' pattern of bringing together the biggest and loudest samplings of music for a nugget of catchy pop music goodness. "Great Big Storm" stars Ruess' now-signature blasted vocals, epic strings, booming drumbeats and honking horns for the entire four minutes.

Though the bombastic music may cover it all, the lyrics to "Great Big Storm" feature a vulnerability and sadness in Ruess' lyricism that he has yet to really showcase in the offerings from Grand Romantic.

"I've been lost in this maze / Losing love losing friends / Losing faith in chemicals / Afraid one day you'll find me / Asleep above the stars," Ruess sings in the song's first verse before revealing that he "won't let go" in the chorus.

"Everything falling down around me / But now we're holding our own / And won't let go / Holding our own in a great big storm," he reveals in the chorus.

The blend of melancholy lyrics and the seemingly happy music of "Great Big Storm" show just how masterful of a songwriter Ruess can be, and it's an effective soon-to-be live anthem.
