Jimi Hendrix biopic, A$AP Mob documentary among films appearing at SXSW

South by Southwest is well-established as the largest music showcase in the world. So how did organizers build on that reputation? By attempting to make it the biggest music film showcase in the world as well. A number of documentaries and dramas will be showing in Austin, just in case you get sick of listening to music. Here are some highlights:

All Is By My Side: This is the obvious highlight for a number of reasons. One, it's a film about Jimi Hendrix. Two, Outkast member Andre 3000 will be playing the legendary guitar. We warn you, the film didn't get get hot reviews during its foreign showings, but the hype is enough to get us interested regardless.

The Winding Stream: Few music genres put as much stock in their history as country music. The form features a number of legendary families that have stayed relevant across multiple generations, and this film focuses on two: the Cashes (yes, as in Johnny Cash) and the Carters.

The 78 Project Movie: The 78 Project was inspired by the work of ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, and his travels across the United States collecting recordings across a number of traditional styles. The producers of this film did very much the same thing, using a direct-to-acetate recorder to create 79 rpm from musicians across the United States.

Frank: A dark comedy tribute to the far edges of alternative rock, Frank scored rave reviews when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Michael Fassbender (wearing a papier-mâché head for the entirety) and Maggie Gyllenhaal star as members of an eccentric avant-garde group as it records an album.

SVDDXNLY: This documentary examines the rise of one of hip-hop's most successful collectives, the A$AP Mob. Not only are members like A$AP Rocky featured, the film is loaded with guest appearances, including Macklemore, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and Rihanna.
