UK electronic trio Nero have been very quiet over the past few years, releasing only a few songs over that span, but also setting out on several tours and doing the festival circuit each summer. In 2011, the trio of Joe Ray, Daniel Stephens and Alana Watson released their debut artist album Welcome Reality and it has lasted for this long. Later this year, the "Promises" group will release their second LP, Between II Worlds and they are gearing up with a revamped live show and promo for the album.
They spoke to Billboard about the album, their new live show and what Between II Worlds means for them as artists.
"There's something to be said for taking the time to make full, formal, artistic albums," says Daniel Stephens.
He notes that the supercharged nature of EDM with its insatiable young fan base can draw artists into putting out as many singles as possible, but that is not their philosophy.
"Not to diss a lot of the current EDM, but when you pump out new tracks every two weeks, you're keeping yourself on the hamster wheel. Our first album has carried us for four years, you know?"
They have totally re-imagined their live show into something that makes them different from others. They debuted a version of it at Coachella and are currently tweaking updates before heading back out on the road this summer.
We're one of the only electronic acts that does this level of live theater, which is great," says Stephens. "But it's a balance. Sometimes we feel like we're stuck in this quandary where the dance fans will complain if the shows don't sound like the album, but that's a lot easier in a DJ set than with a live band. But we think we can do it."
