Scott Stapp surprised no one this week when he announced to the world that he suffered from bipolar disorder. The former Creed vocalist was in the news for all of the wrong reasons last year, and his condition couldn't have helped at all with his behavior.
The rocker summed up his bizarre actions in one paragraph, better than we ever could with multiple:
"I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse," he said. "I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car. In my delusional thinking, I thought my family was involved in ISIS, and that millions of dollars had been taken from me to support terrorism. All of it was nonsense. I was out of my mind."
Stapp has entered a dual diagnostic facility, according to People magazine, and is undergoing intensive therapy, as well as taking medication for his disorder.
"It was hard to process," he said of acing his diagnosis. "There's a stigma associated with it. But Jaclyn (his wife) kept telling me, 'Embrace it. We love you.' It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer."
Stapp first entered the news during October of 2014 when he postponed the remaining dates on his "Proof of Life" tour, supposedly to help him keep pace with his sober lifestyle. Less than a month later he released a hastily shot video in which he claimed to be both homeless and penniless. He then announced a plan to release a crowdsourced solo album-fair enough-but things began to spiral out of control when the vocalist, sounding frantic, made calls alleging his family's connections to ISIS and even threatened to kill President Obama. That latter claim may have helped him out in the end...even when local police can't corral you, the Secret Service doesn't mess around.
Good to know Stapp is on solid ground...nothing funny about a situation such as his.
