Fox has released the first trailer for Scream Queens, a forthcoming dark comedy starring Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Ariana Grande, Abigail Breslin and Nick Jonas, among others. It's a murder mystery from Ryan Murphy, who has made a name through both Glee and American Horror Story.
That kind of success record obviously secured a decent budget for Murphy and his creative vision. The show will feature one of the most loaded casts on television in its first season. The plot will focus around the Kappa Kappa Tao, which experienced a series of murders two decades ago...and it seems the murderer is coming back for more. The trailer seems to present Roberts as the main character, although she also serves as the prototypical sorority snob (named Chanel)...so we may be getting mislead. Michele's character, Hester (nicknamed "Neckbrace" due to her scoliosis), seems to be a more down-to-earth protagonist. Grande will star as Chanel #2, one of Chanel's goons...although she doesn't get much screen time during the trailer, perhaps suggesting that she'll be among the first to get offed.
In a clever reference to horror movies of old, Jamie Lee Curtis (who got her break starring in the original Halloween), will appear as the dean of the university where the show takes place. Jonas doesn't appear in the trailer, although earlier reports suggest he'll be a member of a golf-based fraternity on campus.
Although both Michele and Grande appear in the cast, and Murphy is behind the plot, don't expect any musical numbers. Although we wouldn't be disappointed with a character in a neck brace singing a duet with Grande...that might push things over the top.
Murphy is being rather shameless in promoting what the show does have however: "There's countless love triangles and lots of sex," he says.
Scream Queens will debut in September.
