There seems to be a significant amount of Americans that think it fit to send Justin Bieber back to Canada in the wake his drunken drag-racing and neighbor's house-egging. A petition emerged on whitehouse.gov on January 23 calling for the removal of the pop star's green card and banishment from living in the United States. The petition requires 100,000 "signatures" before the White House will take it seriously, a goal the document has healthily surpassed, now having nearly 243,000 signatures as of publishing.
The creator(s) of the petition are probably giving each other high-fives and toasting with cans of Natural Lite. We agree it would be humorous to imagine Obama's staffers considering the demands of the hastily drawn-up petition...if those individuals weren't being paid federal dollars to consider petitions that mean absolutely nothing for the United States.
There are hundreds of open petitions at whitehouse.gov, and most are even more idiotic than the Bieber pitch. There are are legitimate calls for action however: One calls for an increase of research funding for Angelman Syndrome, a condition causing seizures and mental handicaps that doctors believe is within reach of curing. Another asks the Army Corp of Engineers to stop draining a lake on the Texas/Oklahoma border during times of drought, as it affects endangered species and local businesses. We can't claim to be experts on any of these subjects, but we can accurately predict they'll never see the light of day. Only 348 people saw fit to give research funds to Angelman Syndrome...243,000 had time to jokingly demand a pop star be deported.
The good news for democracy is that the people can bring all of these issues to the attention of those in power. The bad news is that people have a tendency to be easily distracted by irrelevant celebrity news features.
And ICYMI: Immigration Services can't confiscate Bieber's Green Card unless he's convicted and given at least one year in prison, or charged with a violent crime.
