While fans of The X-Files are completely over the moon because their beloved show is returning for a reboot in January, they aren't the only ones thrilled by the great news. Series star David Duchovny recently received the very first script for the revival and he said it brought him to tears. As it turns out, he wanted it to happen just as much as the rest of us did and he is so grateful that fans have held out hope for over a decade that something as special as The X-Files could find new life on television.
While longtime fans are thrilled to have Scully and Mulder back on the air, six episodes doesn't seem like nearly enough time to spend with the characters. Luckily, Duchovny agrees and voiced his thoughts in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"I would be open to doing another cycle. I don't know that I could do a 20-episode version of this show at this point in my life, and I don't know that Gillian could. But I think everybody is open ended on what happens after this. Certainly, we didn't bring it back with the idea of ending it. We'd been planning it for a long time. It took a long time to get all the people in the same place and get the deal with Fox. So let's say two years we've been talking about doing it. Now it's the fun part. Now we actually get to do it. That was nice and strangely emotional for me, and I'll have to figure out how to use that [in the performance]. I can tell you absolutely nothing-and it's fantastic," said the actor.
Wow. Do you think that maybe The X-Files will return for a few seasons with a limited run? Could fans of the paranormal series get that lucky? It actually would make a lot of sense if the ratings for the reboot are as crazy as the network is anticipating. It could also usher in a new style of programming where popular series run on a limited basis freeing up the actors to continue on with other projects as well.
Would it work? Do you think that The X-Files might break new ground by reviving the show for a few seasons? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
