Flume has unveiled his first single of 2015 "Simple Minds" featuring Miike Snow vocalist Andrew Wyatt. In addition to the song, the "Holdin On" producer has released an accompanying music video that features the DJ floating and dancing around the Sydney Opera House in the middle of the night.
The track is a noted change for Flume who has helped carve out the synth heavy Australian sound that has gone global in the electronic music community. He evolves with this release with a more patient build and a glitchier, more complex drop.
This is the first original piece we have heard from Flume since his 2013 EP with Chet Faker, Lockjaw, though he has been remixing the likes of Lorde, Arcade Fire and Sam Smith since then. There is no word on whether or not this will appear on his long-awaited sophomore album, but don't be surprised to see it appear on there.
The location is fitting with today's release with Flume's upcoming set of gigs at the venue. He will first perform tonight (or has already) for the Vivid Festival and then will headline the following two nights for his label's 10-year celebration on Friday and Saturday, FCX: Ten years of Future Classic.
Flume spoke about the track on his Facebook, revealing how he worked with singer Andrew Wyatt and how the filming was done.
"This is the first original song I've released in a while—working with Andrew Wyatt was one of the most natural collabs I've worked on—he is a seasoned pro and really opened me up to this new way of working."
This video was put together by director Clemens Habicht, being inside the Sydney Opera House filming overnight with no one in the building was a real privilege—it has such a presence, so much character. Clem really nailed the balance I wanted between the real and synthetic and he has a great eye. It's our love letter to Sydney."
