After reeling in an abundance of viewers for its first hit season, the Serial podcast will regenerate with confirmed seasons two and three. Podcast host and producer Sarah Koenig announced via e-mail blast that she and her team are gathering information for two fresh, independent stories.
The podcast, which lures in listeners with its haunting opening notes, is expected to return in the fall while season three is scheduled for release the following spring. Details remain unknown, although Koenig wrote, "What we can say is that they're very different from Season One, but no less interesting to us."
Koenig shed some light on the legal progress of season one's main subject, Adnan Syed, who was charged with the murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Syed claimed he was dealt ineffective counsel from Cristina Gutierrez, his attorney at the time who failed to contact potential alibi witness Asia McClain. Eventually, this led to the case reopening in circuit court where Syed was expected appear next month.
The court has paused the case, giving Syed time to request re-opening post-conviction proceedings and to include the statement made by McClain. After the podcast came to a close, McClain revealed that she saw Syed in the library the day Lee disappeared in 1999. Although certain details have come to light, there is no guarantee that Syed will be granted a new trial or that the court will hear McClain's latest testimony. Either way, the testimony can develop innovative facts and uplifting development in the case that will most likely resume in the Court of Special Appeals once the McClain concern is dealt with, notes Rolling Stone.
Koenig addressed that the wide-spread, public curiosity about the Adnan Syed case played a momentous role in the decision to reopen parts of the 1999 case. "Clearly the appellate judges are aware the public is watching, and while I don't imagine they'd order anything they didn't think was just, I do think it's possible that they're being extra careful to make this process as transparent as they can, so that the public will fully understand their ultimate decision," she wrote.
As the court continues to search for answers, Koenig will hit the road to make live appearances alongside co-producer Julie Snyder to discus season one, play exclusive tapes and further interact with the public to explain challenges within reporting and quickly entering the spotlight.
