A social media mystery has fans wondering if British rockers The 1975 have broken up after vocalist Matt Healy posted an odd message on the band's Twitter before several of its social media accounts disappeared. All we have is theories right now.
The message posted by Healy was a classic comic strip with the speech bubbles replaced. The narrative seems to suggest that the band has broken up, and indeed there is a lengthy letter to fans running alongside the comic that implies the same thing.
"As much as we might like things to stay the same, change is an inevitable part of life," reads part of the letter. "We can't simply go on forever—always staying the same, never evolving. So we must leave, with a parting 'we love you'—we are already gone. Thank you, The 1975."
That seems pretty dire. Yet we can't help but notice how over-the-top and dystopian the rest of the page is. An earlier segment in the letter reads (in all caps) "We've killed the roxkstars just another casualty in the war against popular art-butchered by our postmodern reflective propensitie (sic)." Another image, apart from the comic, shows a figure dressed in black smothering a pink figure...the black figure is labelled "Old Matty" (Healy) and the smaller figured is appropriately named "Pink" ("New Matty" in parentheses). The caption for that image reads "Be young and shut up."
Is this actually a breakup declaration or a dramatic introduction to a new album in the works? Indeed one of the panels in the comic suggests "it's all part of an act!!" (although the next panel says it isn't).
Some theories: The 1975 have only released one album, so it does seem a bit quick for a breakup. And now, more than two years later, seems like the right time to be working on chapter two. A more ambitious theory: The dystopian themes and the "Pink" character almost seems like a reference to Pink Floyd's The Wall album. Could there be a connection?
The 1975 released one of the most controversial, at least critically, albums of 2013 with its self-titled debut. Some ate it right up while others deemed it a disappointment.
