With the Entourage movie opening in theaters this Wednesday, June 3, two of the film's stars—Jeremy Piven, who plays the inimitable Ari Gold, and Kid Cudi, who plays Gold's assistant Allen—were featured on Complex's June/July cover story as they discuss their paths throughout the cutthroat entertainment industry—music and film—as well as, the Entourage movie, which will feature cameos from other musicians like T.I., Pharrell and Calvin Harris.
They both discuss quite a bit, including how today's industry is so fast paced and nobody has any patience anymore. Everyone wants to be big right away. "They want to blow up now," remarks Piven. Cudi laments the lack of musicality and professionalism from other artists who want to make it big with a quick viral track that doesn't have anything deep in it.
He tells the story of how difficult it was to make "Day 'n' Nite" and how much time he spent with Dot Da Genius going over every little detail, which helped make it the hit it became.
"Nowadays, anyone can make some sh*t in their room. It's easy to make sh*t. You don't even need a keyboard now. People make beats, become an artist overnight, and it's like, 'Where's the hard work?' I remember me and Dot Da Genius sitting for hours, me being on him about the mix for 'Day 'n' Nite,' being like, 'It's not right. We want people to take us seriously.' We listened to Dr. Dre's beats. We listened to Timbaland's kicks and drums. Kanye sh*t—we needed to sound as professional as that," Cudi recollected.
"We didn't have shit, but we approached it with professionalism. I approached it like, 'We have to be over-the-top good.' I don't think kids have that nowadays. They just throw some sh*t out there, throw some auto-tune on it, like, 'I don't need anybody to tell me if I'm in key. I don't need anybody with me that has any musical ear at all.'"
He uses J. Cole as an example of an artist who plays instruments and really takes his time to craft professional, quality music. Cudder fans are still awaiting news on his upcoming album Speedin' Bullet To Heaven, which is expected some time this year.
