In commemoration of the 16th anniversary of ágætis byrjun, Sigur Rós will live stream rare concert footage from the exact day they released their 1999 sophomore album. On June 12, 1999, Iceland natives headlined the Icelandic Opera House for an 11-song-set. The 92 minute gig will be available to stream on the band's official website at 5 p.m. EST.
Live at the Icelandic Opera House, a 16th anniversary edition of ágætis byrjun will be unveiled as a deluxe vinyl box set complete with bonus material, unheard recordings and audio from the momentous Icelandic Opera House performance, notes NME.
Sigur Rós created their own rendition of The National's "The Rains of Castamere," specifically written to appear in Game of Thrones. The track was featured in April of 2014 during the episode "The Lion And The Rose." While shooting the show in Iceland, Sigur Rós fans and showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff played the band's music during their stay in the trio's native area, launching an idea for cameos. Members Jónsi Birigisson, Georg Hólm and Orri Páll Dýrason found their way onto the GOT set in Croatia, ready to make their debut on the show as musicians.
The trio's latest LP of seven, Kveikur, saw its release in 2013--the first without founding drummer Kjartan Sveinsson. In 2001, ágætis byrjun won a Shortlist Music Prize Award and the album that gave the band critical acclaim has made numerous "Best of" lists, notes Rolling Stone.
