There's been plenty of concern thrown around regarding the EDM genre and the safety of its live shows. Most of that concern revolves around drinking and illegal drug use, the combination of which led to the deaths of numerous concertgoers during 2013. Dubstep titan Skrillex is facing legal action for a different kind of concert behavior however: stage diving.
Skrillex was playing a show at The Belasco in Las Vegas during February 2012 when he dove from the stage into the crowd, a common occurrence at the DJ's shows. Fan Jennifer Fraissl claims that she suffered trauma as a result of his dive, and later had a stroke as a result. There is no indication from her story that she required immediate medical care from the incident. She is suing Skrillex for an unspecified amount, and also suing The Belasco for not taken proper steps to prevent the DJ from stage diving.
Neither Skrillex nor the venue are commenting on the lawsuit.
Physical activity at concerts is rarely the subject of litigation despite its prevalence among some genres. Metal music in particular invites violence with its mosh pits (the "wall of death" is a particularly friendly style), and stage diving is prevalent as well. Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe was arrested in the Czech Republic during 2012 for allegedly pushing a fan to his death when fans climbed onstage. The court found Blythe innocent of all charges, but the incident did touch off a period of safety concern in metal.
