Since 2011's King of Limbs, Radiohead fans have been frenzied, waiting for news on the alternative rock band's ninth studio album. Guitarist Jonny Greenwood shed some light on the band's latest ventures, confirming that theyre working in the studio "in periods" and that the process "took a lot of time."
"We didn't do anything together for too long, so restarting took a lot of time," Greenwood told Dutch music website 3voor12, as translated by Consequence of Sound. "We're working in periods now. This afternoon, Thom and I will work on a song we started yesterday, see what it will lead to."
He continued to share that they're revisiting the 1996 track, "Lift" saying, "What people don't know is that there's a very old song on each album, like 'Nude' on 'In Rainbows'. We never found the right arrangement for that, until then. 'Lift' is just like that. When the idea is right, it stays right. It doesn't really matter in which form."
Radiohead have put in work on their ninth LP from the very beginning of the year. Greenwood told the Sunday Times in February that they "changed their method" and had been in the swing of recording for "a couple months."
"We've certainly changed our method again. It's too involved [to explain how]," Greenwood said. "We're kind of limiting ourselves; working in limits. So we'll see what happens. It's like we're trying to use very old and very new technology together to see what happens."
Front man Thom Yorke unveiled his first show date in support of Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, last year's solo album, notes NME. He'll take on gigs at Tokyo's Summersonic Festival on August 15 and the Hotess Club's all-nighter. Nigel Godrich, Radiohead producer, confirmed the news via Twitter. Yorke also ventured into another side of music, crafting an 18-day soundtrack to Stanley Donwood's art exhibition. Donwood, a close friend of the band, is responsible for most of Radiohead's visual and album artwork.
The lengthy and atmospheric soundtrack "Subterrenea" includes original material that spans a total of 18 days. An official release hasn't been mentioned, but the soundtrack can be previewed here.
