The Digital Dreams Festival in Toronto left fans with a half-empty feeling this weekend as the first day of the event was cancelled due to heavy rain, meaning fans missed out on performances from Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Porter Robinson and Steve Angello.
There was much consternation from fans over the cancellation, but this wasn't just the promoters trying to save a few bucks (rain at festival grounds can cause massive bills for promoters...Lollapalooza needed to recoup $800,000 in lawn repairs at Grant Park during 2011): Heavy rain posed a significant flood hazard, as the location of the event-an island in Lake Ontario off the shore-kind of leaves it open for hazard. Promoters already worry about drug use at festivals...they'll be damned if concertgoers drown.
That said, fans weren't happy with the decision. It's a bummer, but some of the reactions on the event's Facebook page were downright petty.
"BRING ARMIN TO DAY 2 OR I WILL SUE," ranted one fan of the trance headliner. Especially humorous was the fan who claimed that he spent months preparing his body for the event...because apparently you can only get random hookups at EDM festivals. "Refund my gym membership," he posted. "Wasted 4 months of my life."
We felt bad for you guys for like five minutes there...but these reactions. The good news is that Day 2 went ahead as planned, and all attendees will be refunded 50 percent of their weekend pass due to the cancellation. The not good news, but at least Digital Dreams fans can know others are suffering as well, is that parts of the Firefly Festival in Delaware was suspended due to tornado fears, and Toronto's Ribfest was also cancelled because of the weather.
