Tame Impala's Kevin Parker Denies Rumors Labeling 'Cause I'm A Man' Sexist

The lyrics to Tame Impala's "Cause I'm A Man," are allegedly sexist, but frontman Kevin Parker knew this day would come, denying any negative connotations and sexist interpretations linked to the track. Releasing the song in conjunction with its third studio album Currents, some have dissected the lyrics as Parker's way to attribute his bad behavior to simply being a male. The lyrics read, "Cause I'm a man, woman, Don't always think before I do, Cause I'm a man, woman, That's the only answer I've got for you."

In a recent interview with Stereogum, Parker explains his thought process behind crafting the lyrics to the 10th track on their 2015 LP. "It's really meant to be interpreted more like 'I'm a man' as in 'I'm a human. I'm merely a man,'" he says.

"I understand how it can be perceived as sexist, almost misogynistic, but put it this way: I know deep in my heart, I am not in any way sexist. And I knew there would be people who would think that. There was a small part of me that was excited about ruffling some feathers 'cause I never do that, you know? I'm not that kind of person," Parker continued.

Currents dropped on July 17 following Tame Impala's sophomore album, 2012's Lonerism and its debut album, 2010's Innerspeaker. Speaking to NME, Parker described the band's transition into dance-heavy music, saying "I wanted to make something that from the sound of it could be down at the club. I just realised that I'd never heard Tame Impala played somewhere with a dancefloor or where people were dancing."

Later this year, Tame Impala will head to the UK and Ireland for a number of gigs:

Electric Picnic Festival (September 4)
End Of The Road Festival (5)
Glasgow Barrowland (8)
Liverpool Olympia (9)
Isle of Wight Bestival (10)
