In perhaps one of the least surprising and still most exciting album announcements of the year, the Dead Weather has confirmed that its third album, Dodge & Burn, would drop during September as part of Third Man Records' Vault subscription series.
The band—a "supergroup" featuring Jack White, The Kills' Allison Mosshart, Queens of The Stone Age's Dean Fertita, and Jack Lawrence of The Greenhornes—hasn't released a full-length since Sea of Cowards during 2010. Nonetheless, fans had to assume that a new record would be coming soon, considering the multitude of tracks released this year as part of the vault series. The four songs—"Buzzkill(er)," "It's Just Too Bad," "Open Up (That's Enough)" and "Rough Detective"—will all be featured on Dodge & Burn, as well as eight other tracks.
There hasn't been official album released yet, but a recent promotional image might provide a hint. It features the band sitting on a black-light landscape, featuring a burning pile of tires in the background.
One disappointing detail, reported by Pitchfork, is that the band doesn't plan on touring behind the record. Reasons why haven't been given...although The Kills do have several months of shows planned, it doesn't seem like they necessarily continue after September. We can only hope that Dead Weather is just playing with us at this point.
UPDATE: We initially reported that Dodge & Burn would only be available through the Third Man Records Vault subscription series, but that's incorrect. The standard version of the album will be available through traditional outlets, although a deluxe edition will be offered through the vault service as its September release. It will include an exclusive copy of the LP, on yellow vinyl with black "debris"; a bonus 7" of the first single "I Feel Love (Every Million Miles)" with B-side "Cop and Go," as well as a pack of playing cards featuring the band members as the face cards.
