As we near closer to the release of film Southpaw. rapper Eminem talks about his role as executive producer on the soundtrack, as well as being featured in the project with Gwen Stefani. The rapper sings the praises of fellow artists he admires such as Lil Wayne and Kendrick Lamar. In a candid interview with Time, Eminem answers the question on if he has a project in the works, as well as what other artists he's currently listening to and more.
Although the Detroit rapper had a lot to do with orchestrating the soundtrack for Southpaw (July 24) we shouldn't necessarily be on the look out for a new solo project from the rapper as he shares:
"I'm just "trying to figure out what to do next musically." Regarding the soundtrack, he shares: "We wanted to make sure that the songs would remind you of the movie years down the road. When you think of "Don't You (Forget About Me)," you think of The Breakfast Club. When you think of 'Eye of the Tiger,' you think of Rocky."
Eminem talks career lulls saying," Oh, me? For sure. Probably the Encore days. Personally, I look at Relapse as a lull.".
He talks about how the game needs artists such as Drake and Big Sean, but sings the praises of artists like Kendrick Lamar, who he will be featured with on the Straight Outta Compton soundtrack. He also has a lot of admiration for Lil Wayne.
Eminem says regarding fellow rappers he's listening to:
"I try to stay up on everything that's out. I love [Lil] Wayne, Drake, Big Sean, ScHoolboy Q. I love Kendrick [Lamar]. I just try to pay attention to what's out. Wayne puts out a new song, and my ears perk up. There are certain artists that make me do that just because of the caliber that they rhyme at—it's like candy to me. Kendrick, the way he puts albums together—front to back, they're like pieces of art. But hip-hop needs Drake, too. Hip-hop needs Big Sean."
