Madison Square Garden might be the world's most famous venue, but musicians know the real sign of success in New York City is a headlining gig at Yankee Stadium. Romeo Santos, the pop star currently dominating the Latin charts, will be the first Latin artist to book a concert at the new Yankee Stadium.
Santos announced the concert at a press conference at the venue on Monday. The performer, who was born in The Bronx, will be performing the show July 12, the day before his new album Formula, Vol. 2 drops. His last stop in the Big Apple was during the supporting tour for his album Formula, Vol. 1. The show will be the first Latin music concert at Yankee Stadium (new or old) since the Fania All Stars played its famous show in 1976. If anyone can fill seats at the venue, it should be Santos, who sold more than 18,000 tickets to each of his three Madison Square Garden shows during his last tour.
"It is truly an honor," Santos said. "It's a huge responsibility."
No word has been given yet as to who, if anyone, will serve as opening acts.
Santos currently holds the top three spots on the Latin Digital Songs chart: "Cancioncitas de Amor," "Propuesta Indecente," and his track "Odio"-which features Drake-is also at the top spot for Hot Latin Songs. The last artist to put three songs atop the Digital Songs chart was Shakira, although her tracks were largely in English despite being classified as "Latin."
Formula, Vol. 2 will feature Nicki Minaj, Marc Anthony and Carlos Santana among other guests.
