Kanye West stopped by for the second episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers to perform a career-spanning medley featuring "Jesus Walks," "Touch the Sky," "Stronger," "Heartless," "All of the Lights," "Mercy" and "Black Skinhead."
Before he took the stage, he sat down with Meyers to discuss a variety of topics including his Yeezus tour being finished (he said he was sad it was over), the ten-year anniversary of his College Dropout debut, getting into the fashion world, how fatherhood has affected his work and a Saturday Night Live sketch that he and Meyers wrote together.
Meyers asked him why he wore a mask during the Yeezus tour. "The mask is great," West responded. "It's freeing. A place where you can express yourself to your audience, to everyone, without being judged, without having to live up to whatever you represent, whatever your name means or doesn't mean."
Then he asked him if his approach to fashion was different than his approach to music. "Everything is the same," he replied. "As you get really successful at one thing, you start to grow and you feel like you can do more things. And your shoe starts to get a little bit tight. So you do everything you can to get a bigger shoe so you can walk further and run faster. Now, in this day and age they're like, 'No, Kanye, you can't run faster. This is the limit.'"
He went on to talk about the walls that Michael Jackson and Jay Z broke down for him and said that he's trying to break down walls for the people ten years from now.
Meyers then asked him if being a father has changed his approach to being in the studio. West responded saying that having a daughter has changed his approach to life in general but that it doesn't necessarily mean he will be the "new Wiggles."
"I'm thinking artistic, intellectual kid-friendly songs," he told Meyers. "Meaning like, you go to Europe and there's nudity on TV. So it's all in the way you raise and have the understanding and appreciation for what you're looking at and what you're hearing and why you're hearing it. You think about the Yeezus album, cursing was definitely necessary. It's like if you sat down and talked to Quentin Tarantino and asked, 'Are you going to make G-rated movies now?' I mean, it's Quentin Tarantino."
When asked whether it's hard for him to eliminate cursing during his televised performances, he said, "I mean dropping cursing is the least of my worries creatively because I feel like it's a necessity for an artist like me, a very punk, forward artist, to be on SNL that many times and to be on TV. That's why I do talk shows, so you guys can have a [makes screech sound] in the matrix every now and then."
Finally they talked about West's humorous side. Despite being known as an artist who takes himself very seriously, back in 2007 when LeBron James was the host and West was the musical guest, he and Meyers wrote an SNL sketch together in which West interrupts speeches at awards shows, including The Kids Choice Awards, The Nobel Physics Awards and a State Fair pumpkin contest.
