The rapper we know as Earl Sweatshirt is ready to part ways with his current moniker. The next time Thebe Neruda Kgositsile drops new music, it will likely come from a new rap name. The 21-year-old rapper shared the news last night (July 29) on Twitter, and some of his fans weren't too happy.
Earl, along with Tyler, the Creator, was a founding member of Odd Future. Earl has recently distanced himself from the collective, which is likely no more, and, now, he plans to rid himself of the name he entered the game with.
When Tyler sent a flurry of tweets implying Odd Future's dissolution, Earl had "no sympathy for male virgins who're in their feelings about tyler pointing out and solidifying the obvious." He's clearly trying to distance himself from his Odd Future beginnings, but he maintains the name isn't "about hating my past."
He tweeted that he's "not tryna be kind of a joke forever," implying he's got a more "serious"-sounding alias in mind, though he also told his followers that he's "found a flight name that makes me laugh more than earl sweatshirt does." He finished the announcement by taunting his haters with the chorus from Destiny's Child's "Say My Name."
Though the rapper is more serious about his solo career than ever -- his latest album, I Don't Like Sh*t, I Don't Go Outside is his most self-aware body of work yet -- he's still got jokes. Stay tuned for new music from the L.A. rapper, who will soon greet us with his new persona.
