Vic Mensa dropped a freestyle that he's calling "Heir to the Throne," a tribute to Jay Z, his Roc Nation boss and current throne occupant. Feeling some type of way late last night, Vic let loose over the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Who Shot Ya?" and the new Roc-A-Fella signee had a lot to get off his chest.
Last night, Vic asked his Twitter fans if they wanted a freestyle. Of course, they responded in the affirmative, and minutes later, he dropped over three minutes of straight bars over the Ready to Die classic.
In the freestyle, he shouts out big-time rappers, such as A$AP Rocky, Kanye West and Hov, his new boss, who have vetted his skills. He also takes a few shots.
He follows two lines -- "Couple rap n*ggas you thought we was crew / Real life n*ggas is corny what can I do" both with Travi$ Scott's signature "Straight Up" ad-lib. He's clearly taking aim at Scott here, as he did last month, when he tweeted at HotNewHipHop: "don't mention me w no funny style n*ggas," after the site likened his recent track "3 AM" to Scott's style of rapping.
Also in the new rap, he says anyone who compares him to Chicago rapper Chief Keef is "weak minded." And he warns people not to credit his rise to Kanye West, as he, apparently, wrote "U Mad," before 'Ye contributed a verse to the recent hit.
Aside from the namedrops, he interweaves lines about police brutality and growing up as a targeted black male in Chicago:
"Never talk to the cops, you end up dead in prison / My n*gga lil' E came out full grown / Got pulled over driving back through the hood home / N*ggas is targets and we ain't even started / You don't wanna see me go Black Eyed Peas retarded," he raps.
He finishes the freestyle by summarizing his persona, a compelling one at that:
"On my cop killer sh*t like Ice-T back / With a Roc-A-Fella limp and a little Black Panther / A side of Shakur mixed in with Fred Hampton / And there you have it, kid, now 'Can I Live?'"
