Here are our top 5 festivals worth taking out a loan for:
01) Primavera Sound, Spain: May 28-31
Lineup Includes: Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, Angel Olsen, Cloud Nothings, Nine Inch Nails, Jenny Lewis, Neutral Milk Hotel, CHVRCHES, Holy Ghost!, St. Vincent, The National, more.
This lineup is fantastic. I mean...anything that brings together performers like Kendrick Lamar and St. Vincent can't be anything less than amazing. This festival first started in 2001, so you can expect it to run like a well-oiled machine. These acts are such an awesome display of indie rock that they can convert any Top 40 devotee into an indie rock fanatic.
Barcelona (lisp included: pronounced by locals as Bar-se-lona) combines the convenience of a city without losing the appeal of Europe. While there, check out the fountain show, and get off your ass and take a bike tour around the city. Unlike in New York, you wont have the "about to get hit by a car" anxiety while riding around.
02) Eurokeennes Festival, France: July 4-6
Lineup Includes: The Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand, Skrillex, Foster the People, Stromae, Detroit, Robert Planet & The Sensational Space Shifters, Shaka Ponk, and more.
This lineup is a little random, going from indie rock acts like such as Foster the People, to EDM such as Skrillex. Franz Ferdinand are great performers, and it would be my motivating factor for going to this festival. Having different genre performers like this is not commonplace, but it does offer a festival for the dabbler.
So go buy a French for Dummies book, a beret and a bottle of wine. Anything said in French is sexy, and if you don't find someone hot at the festival, you could always go for a fresh baguette.
03) Tomorrowland Festival, Belgium: July 19- 20, July 25-27
Lineup Includes: Armin van Buuren, Diplo, Eric Prydz, Afrojack, Alesso, Laidback Luke, Tiësto, Krewella, Nicky Romero, Above and Beyond, Hardwell, and more.
The festival we all love to hate. We sneer at the bright eyeliner, T-shirts and shorts with a shiny bandeau-wearing people who live at Pier 51. But we all secretly want to paint our faces, wear a tutu, and buy something gold and shiny from American Apparel. The Tomorrowland lineup is basically every club junkie's playlist, but it will even make the most indie of souls jump up and down.
Tomorrowland is the epitome of an amazing rave, and for our parents we might as well be going straight to hell. Tomorrowland was actually going to be cancelled because the town where it's located complained about the raucous behavior going on during festival time. I mean if partying with your friends in Europe isn't reason enough to go, then pissing off uptight Europeans with our "colorful" American manners has to be.
And to satiate your munchies after the show, you're in the land of waffles and chocolate. Enjoy.
04) Wireless Festival, UK: July 4-6
Lineup Includes: Kayne West, Pharrell Williams, 2 Chainz, Iggy Azalea, Wiz Khalifa, Bruno Mars, Outkast, Drake, Ellie Goulding, J.Cole, A Great Big World, and more.
This is one of the biggest-name European festivals, with the biggest names in music to back it up. The list is as A-list as it can get. It's got your favorite rap names like Kayne, and Wiz Khalifa, the favorite slow ballads of A Great Big World, and above all, an OutKast reunion.
You can finally try out the insanely obnoxious fake British accent you've been perfecting. Instead of going to all these artists' concerts separately, save money, make the trip "across the pond" and go see them all at once. A melting pot of various performers, with the perks of being in an English speaking country—what more could you ask for?
05) Northside Music Festival, Denmark: June 13-15
Lineup includes: Franz Ferdinand, A$AP Rocky, Arcade Fire, Lana Del Ray, Oh Land, St. Vincent, Temples, The National, and many more.
This concert would be good for the soul. Lana Del Ray would be the selling point for me: I can't deny myself some soul-wrenching ballads. While The National and Temples thoroughly gouge our emotions, A$AP Rocky and Arcade Fire come in as much needed upbeats, allowing the festival to have a wide, but cohesive set list.
According to the 2013 World Happiness Report, Denmark is the happiest country in the world, which makes it the perfect escape. So cancel your tickets to Disney World and hop on a plane to the happiest place on earth to enjoy the best music can offer.
