Research for the development of recent Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck introduced director Brett Morgen to Cobain's widespread archives, where he uncovered previously unheard material and recordings. Following the film's release, a teenager from Seattle stumbled upon a photo strip of her father and the Nirvana frontman playing a basement show together and most recently, an unheard version of Nirvana's "Sappy" has been uploaded to YouTube.
The alternate track was called "Verse Chorus Verse" at the time of its recording, which is said to have been in 1991 at Sound City Studios in California, NME reports. The track name was swapped for "Sappy" in 1993 for the AIDS-benefit compilation album No Alternative. An earlier take of the 1990 Nevermind outtake can be found on Nirvana's With The Lights Out box set.
The video's caption states: "The band took another stab at recording Sappy at Sound City. Cobain played lead guitar while attempting to sing one live scratch vocal. He also made one formal vocal pass. After overdubbing the lead fuzz guitar with his Rat pedal, Cobain laid down his guitar and walked straight into the control room. 'I don't want to do this, he insisted. I'm not into this song right now. So let's leave it.'"
Cobain's widow and daughter, Courtney Love and Frances Bean Cobain, recently battled a Seattle TV host in court to prevent the release of pictures from Kurt Cobain's death scene. The two emphasized the emotional and psychological damage they'd endure from the photos hitting the public. According to the Seattle Times, King County Superior Court Judge Theresa Doyle ruled against the release efforts due to failure of correctly following procedure, keeping the photos uncovered--for now. TV host Richard Lee believes the pictures will disprove a suicide scene and instead, prove he was murdered.
The dismissal was decided based on Lee's failure to provide Seattle a long enough window to answer his request and improperly serving his lawsuit. The Now See It Person To Person: Kurt Cobain Was Murdered host plans to file a second records request and sue again if ineffective.
