After Kendrick Lamar's masterpiece, To Pimp a Butterfly, the next release out of the TDE camp will come from fellow Los Angeles rapper Jay Rock. The fifth single "90059," off Rock's upcoming, still untitled album, arrived online Friday (Aug. 7). The new track features Lance Skiiwalker and is produced by TDE in-house producer Tae Beast.
The song is named after the zip code to Rock's home neighborhood of Watts in L.A. Rock takes us through Watts, and gives us a first-hand account of what it's really like to live in a place where dope dealing is the main industry, in stirring and gruesome detail:
"Bullets have a name defined by different calibers / Concrete jungle, beware of different challengers / Gotta have the stomach for dookie bags and catheters / Play your cards right or be scratching off them calendars," he raps.
Fans haven't heard from Lance Skiiwalker before, though his compelling presence on "90059" sounds akin to Ol' Dirty Bastard. His maniacal singing on the chorus paints Watts in a different universe, though listeners are brought back to the grim reality each time Rock starts rapping.
"90059" follows "Money Trees Deuce," the sequel to Kendrick Lamar's "Money Trees" -- on which Rock had his most famous verse -- and "Gumbo" as his third single of 2015. Though details are unconfirmed, it seems likely that last year's "Pay for It," featuring Lamar as well as "Parental Advisory" will appear on the upcoming LP. Lamar was, again, recently spotted in the studio with Rock, so expect at least two collabs from the TDE brethren.
The untitled album still doesn't have a release date.
