Coldplay announce new album 'Ghost Stories' with new single, official tracklist and May release date [LISTEN]

After releasing a trippy, Bon Iver inspired teaser single "Midnight" last week, Coldplay have announced the inevitable today (March 3): it's releasing a new album this year. The arena rock band revealed the title, cover artwork , release date and tracklist of its sixth studio album and dropped a new single this morning. It's all very exciting.

According to Official Charts Company, Coldplay's follow-up to Mylo Xyloto will be called Ghost Stories and be released on May 19 in the UK. Logically, it follows the album will drop on May 20 in the United States (unless it receives a Monday release across the globe).

Alongside the shiny new release date and title, Coldplay revealed the album's intricate artwork. At a first glance, it appears simply to be a pair of angel wings against a dark blue sea and nighttime sky. However, as available on the band's official website, a close look reveals dozens of tiny human stories being told throughout the wings.

There's a woman sitting on some stairs, a boy peering into a mirror and seeing what he truly wants to be and couples seemingly making love.

Take a peek at the artwork, photographed above.

Though Coldplay released Ghost Stories track "Midnight" last week, the album's true official first single is "Magic," available now alongside the album pre-order on iTunes.

Unlike the experimental "Midnight," "Magic" is distinctly Coldplay, though the steady drumbeat and plucky guitar in the intro would indicate otherwise. Vocalist Chris Martin returns to his relaxed way of singing in the chilled out track. "Magic" still indicates a new direction for Coldplay. The funky, driving beat has been little heard in the band's music before.

And FINALLY... the Ghost Stories tracklisting. Without further ado, check that out below.

1. "Always In My Head"

3. "Ink"
4. "True Love"
5. "Midnight"
6. "Another's Arms"
