Popcaan releases one of the year's best smoker's anthems with "Weed Is My Best Friend." The Kingston emcee is a well-known stoner, but he's never given an ode to his favorite plant like this. The track puts Popcaan's vocals over the "Life Support Riddim," created by Jamaican producer Justus.
"Weed Is My Best Friend" finds Popcaan's carefree vocals effortlessly dancing atop the summery, minimal Justus production. Justus' "Life Support Riddim" has recently been remixed by many of Jamaica's top emcees, including Movado. Popcaan's take on the "riddim" shows his unique charisma in full force, lending a personal touch to familiar subject matter. The homegrown herb has been good to Popcaan, better than any of his human companions in fact. Listen to the track below.
The release follows "Unruly Prayer," on which Popcaan shouts out Drake and the rest of OVO. Drake also makes a cameo in the video, as does Popcaan's recently revealed best friend.
Before that, Popcaan featured alongside Young Thug on Jamie xx's "Good Times," recently named Spotify's "Song of the Summer." Popcaan sang on the track's chorus, though many thought Jamie should have given him at least one verse, as Thugger was given two. Brooklyn producer Dre Skull recently dropped a "Good Times" remix that gave dancehall fans that verse, along with additional ones from Assassin, Konshens and Kranium.
Popcaan's last album, Where We Come From, released on Dre Skull's Mixpak Records, had a few "Song of the Summer" candidates for 2014, such as "Everything Nice" and "Love Yuh Bad." Popcaan has the summer soundtrack formula down to a tee, though it probably feels like summer all year long in Kingston.
Listen to Popcaan, as well as other dancehall all-stars Jah X, Mavado and Junior Reid, tackle Bobby Shmurda's "Hot N*gga" here.
