Mumford & Sons, in its constant quest to distance itself from the fiddles and banjos of old, have taken to covering "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" by Eurythmics, and last night in Los Angeles the group had help from Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 as well as tour openers the Vaccines and Jack Garratt.
Marcus Mumford and his band of bearded gentlemen are on tour in support of the group's latest album Wilder Mind and have been looking for ways to project a more electric sound than fans of the kick-drum folk tunes of the past are used to hearing.
We first saw this trend when the band covered "2Shy" by electro-R&B artist Shura on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, which also found its way into the live set.
The introduction of Mark Hoppus certainly signals more of a push from the band away from folk and into the electric guitar space. Not to mention, covering an '80s synth-pop classic like "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)."
The video, shot by a fan and posted on Facebook, shows Hoppus playing bass while Mumford and the Vaccines lay down a healthy layer of synth and guitars while Garratt keeps the beat moving on a drum machine. Hoppus even jumps in for some backing vocals.
Mumford & Sons is taking its tour internationally after hitting up the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover festival in Salida, Colorado for two days. After that, the group will head to the UK and Australia before taking a break from the road.
