Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes sets to release the debut album for her latest side project Sexwitch next month. What began with a mysterious round of hangman via Instagram, Khan's recent onstage performance with psych rock outfit TOY under the moniker Sexwitch quickly grabbed the attention of critics and fans alike. The new band played their first official set this past weekend at the Green Man Festival in Wales, sharing songs like "The Bride" and "Ho Howa" with an eager audience.
What began as a collaborative effort for the Zendooni: Funk, Psychedelia And Pop From The Iranian Pre-Revolution Generation compilation for producer Dan Carey's record label Speedy Wunderground back in 2013 has led to a new creative venture for the multi-talented singer songwriter. Khan, who worked with Carey on The Haunted Man, her third full length as Bat For Lashes, recently revealed plans to release a self-titled live album for her latest project while details related to her solo work remain unknown.
The self-titled release will feature a few of the tracks performed live this past weekend at the Green Man Festival. Centered around 1970s psych from various global locations such as Morrocco, Iran and the United States, the album's tentative tracklist of songs, which were recorded in Carey's studio in South London will include six covers total and is set to release Sept. 25 on Echo/BMG.
Khan, a known perfectionist, shared her experience of this weekend's performance in a recent interview with Pitchfork. "The moment the first note hit, I felt like I was having an out of body experience," she said. "I felt so much adrenaline and power, and I thought my lungs were gonna implode" The half-Pakistani singer also shared the origin of the band's name, which reportedly resulted from a joke mixed with inspiration stemming from the " ancient feminine archetype" of the witch. Defitenly in tune with the performer's already established asthetic, the group's forthcoming release can certainly be expected to cast a spell of its own.
Sexwitch plans to headline London's XOYO Festival on Sept. 25.
