First, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis introduced the world to the glamour of going to the "Thrift Shop" instead of spending thousands of dollars on clothes. And now, the hip-hop duo are back with a funky new song to bring moped scooters into the streets. Today (Aug. 27), Macklemore is leading up to the release of his new album with the funky fresh new single "Downtown."
"Downtown" almost follows the formula of "Thrift Shop" down to a T. The new single kicks off with a funky, horn-blasting beat courtesy of Lewis, and Macklemore rapping about going to the store to pick up a new ride. But unlike some other rappers, he's not in need of a Bugatti. Macklemore is looking for a moped.
Soon, the song takes a giant left turn and turns into an ode to old school hip-hop with a retro funk beat and verses courtesy of rap legends Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe Dee and Melle Mel. The song's hook comes courtesy of Foxy Shazam's Eric Nally, who blasts through the rest of the track, singing about the wonders of riding downtown on your new set of two wheels and a leather banana seat between your legs.
As for the epic music video, well, it needs to be watched to be enjoyed correctly.
"Downtown" is set to act as the lead single for Macklemore's sophomore studio album, which is due out sometime before the end of the year. Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and their "Downtown" crew are expected to perform the new single this Sunday (Aug. 30) at the 2015 MTV VMAs.
