We're seeing the first glimpse of a blossoming young music career for Kacy Hill, who Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label last year. Her debut single, "Foreign Fields," debuted on Beats1 radio last week and now we're getting a look at the music video.
The former American Apparel model worked as a dancer for West's Yeezus tour and had independently released the single "Experience" just months before signing to the Good label. West was obviously impressed with the multi-talented artist who utilizes an electronic R&B sound reminiscent of FKA Twigs or James Blake. As Pitchfork notes, this is an apt comparison as Kanye has previously called Blake his "favorite artist," so it would only make sense he'd target someone of similar style and talent. It also doesn't hurt that Kacy and Yeezy share an interest in fashion.
Rankin, a highly acclaimed fashion photographer, directed the music video with Jack Garratt behind the production of this beautiful minimalist track. Soft choppy piano and handclaps drive most of the instrumentation through the beginning of the song led by Hill's deceptively delicate voice that crescendos to a Florence and the Machine-like roar once the bass and synth kick in at the end.
The visuals are rather stunning on the video too and not just because of Hill's ginger complexion, freckled face and nose ring. Faces flash across the screen, sometimes crying, sometimes covered by a mask and usually draped in a translucent red fabric. But, that fabric turns purple when a child pokes his innocent face out onto the screen only to be replaced by the dark red imagery of entrapment. In the end, Hill cuts a slit into the fabric to peer into the camera before giving a smirk and turning away.
Work is still being done on the album, according to an exclusive interview with HungerTV, but you can be sure to expect many big things from this artist down the line. Watch the music video below.
