Jackie Chan is a man of many talents, and now he's aiming to add successful music manager to that list. The Chinese acting legend is taking a DIY approach to assembling a K-Pop band by the name of JJCC. Chan was involved in recruiting the group's members, and is reportedly training them as well as handling typical managerial duties.
No doubt a few eyebrows were raised when we said the Chinese actor was managing a K-pop (or Korean pop) group, versus a band from his homeland. Chan has demonstrated pride in his ancestral land over the years, but we'll give him a break for this one. Other Asian nations feature more established pop music scenes-such as K-pop and the Japanese J-pop-that have better outreach to western audiences. Chinese pop music-typically divided by language into Cantonese (C-pop) and Mandarin (M-pop)-has a healthy audience within China, but could use some help getting exposure.
If Chan can successfully launch JJCC, he could turn to his homeland for follow-up projects. The name JJCC reportedly stands partially for "joining cultures," although it's also been suggested it stands for "Jackie Chan." The group features four male Korean members, but also one member of Chinese-Australian descent.
A press statement regarding the group claimed that the members could "sing, dance, rap and act." The lattermost point might indicate the direction of Chan's managerial plans. The actor himself got started at the Peking Opera School, and has record more than 25 albums worth of Chinese music, including soundtracks for his own films. Chan realizes few things sell as well as performers that can dominate both film and music charts.
