In a strange twist, Madonna's brother Christopher Ciccone spoke out in support of the county clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue same sex marriage licenses, calling the gay community "sore losers," in the wake of gay marriage being legalized in all states. Ciccone himself is openly gay, but in a Facebook message posted over the weekend (Sept. 4) that he still feels that Kim Davis should be allowed her "religious freedom."
While he did acknowledge that Davis should be required to follow federal law, he also said, "But why should she when DOJ and other civil authorities don't follow federal law when they choose not to, i.e. Washington State and Colorado (POT) come to mind...or the abstract notion of 'sanctuary cities.' I always thought that sanctuary was the province of churches," Ciccone wrote, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Ciccone has a unique view on the situation as a member of the gay community, saying that "the county clerk in Kentucky deserves about as much support as you can give her if she were a Muslim woman who insisted on covering her face and refused to give not only gay marriages licenses but divorce, accusations of rape and driving a car without your man's approval."
His posts were fiery, and it remains to be seen whether he will be criticized by the gay community as these types of passionate outbursts are often misunderstood. Ciccone is not the only supporter of Davis; a crowd of 300 posted outside of the Grayson, Kentucky, jail this weekend where she is now serving time for refusing an order to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
