Damon Wayans celebrated his birthday on Friday (Sept. 4) by stopping by Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club in New York for an in-depth interview on why he got fired from Saturday Night Live, working on In Living Color and more. The comedian also voiced his opinion about Bill Cosby's rape and drug allegations, admitting he didn't believe there was much truth to them and alledging the women are only after his money. Wayans' controversial comments were met with an uproar of backlash and confusion.
More than 45 women have come forward accusing Cosby of sexual assault, many of whom claim to have been drugged by the comedian. Despite the outpour of allegations and overwhelming amount of evidence brought against him, including an interview of Cosby admitting to giving women quaaludes, Wayans came to his defense.
"And some of them, really, is unrapeable," Wayans said about the women I look at them and go, 'No, he don't want that. Get outta here!' Look, I understand fame. I've lived it. Women will throw themselves at you. They just want be in your presence. There's some that innocently will come up there, but not 40-something women. They're not that naive."
The 55-year-old, who also serves as an actor, director, writer and producer, dismissed the rape accusations and blamed the situation on romantic relationships with Cosby that ultimately went sour. Instead of moving forward from those "relationships," he believes the women "cried rape." While sharing his views on the scandal, Wayans is seen laughing, smiling and making jokes.
Wayans was baffled as to why the women waited so long to bring these alleged incidents to light. When radio co-host Angela Yee reminded him that a few of the victims came forward several years ago, he responded like this: "But if you listen to them talk, they go, 'Well, the first time.' The first time? Bitch, how many times did it happen? Just listen to what they're saying."
The comedian must've had a change of heart near the end of the interview, because he backtracked on a statement he made. Wayans said "there may be" some cases where Cosby was guilty of rape. He then issued an apology to any women who were abused by him.
As you can imagine, members of social media weren't too pleased with the comments he made and the lack of sincerity in his jokes. Wayans took to Twitter to assure the public his comments were misconstrued, but at that point many fans lost their sympathy for the actor.
