Leading our country and making controversial executive decisions isn't enough challenge for President Barack Obama. He recently added another challenge to his roster, surviving the wild with a well-known thrill seeking nature enthusiast. Of course, the Secret Service was never too far away, but it was still a departure for a modern-day presenident to be so far "out there" in the wild. Early morning on Tuesday (Sept. 8), NBC's Today debuted a preview of for an episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls as they battle the wild terrains of Alaska. In the clip, the British host convinces the president to gnaw on a salmon carcass previously chewed on by a bear.
Obama teamed up with Bear Grylls last week in Alaska to film an upcoming episode for the hit NBC partially unscripted series. The two are seen feasting on a "bloody carcass" left behind by a bear who got to the salmon before they could. Luckily, the bear left some fatty remains on the carcass for them to enjoy. While Obama, who's making the most of his final days in the White House, was thankful to know he was eating a food he was familiar with, he regretted finding out that he was chowing down on scraps from a wild animal.
"As president, I am in what's called the bubble, and Secret Service makes sure that I'm always out of danger, which I very much appreciate, but it can be a little confining," said President Obama about his refreshing experience in the woods. "Every once in a while, if I do something unexpected, the phrase we use is that, 'The bear is loose,' so to be with Bear in the woods, it doesn't get any better than that."
The Harvard Law School graduate was initially on a three-day Alaska excursion gathering data on the effects of climate change in the area, visiting cities like Anchorage, Dillingham, and Kotzebue, as well as popular landmarks in the state like Exit Glacier and Kenai Fjords National Park. Climate change and global warming have been popular topics of debate for several presidents and presidential candidates.
The popular show has hosted several other high-profile guests including Zac Efron, Channing Tatum, and Ben Stiller. Currently in their second season, the show host features top celebrities like Kate Hudson, Michael B. Jordon, Kate Winslet, Ed Helms, and of course our 44th President, Barack Obama. His special edition episode is expected to air later this year.
