Social media is driving just about everything these days. Corporations and entertainers alike are wondering how they can reach fans via platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to drive attention for their products. A recent study by social media analytics company Mashwork demonstrates that one music genre's audience dominates Twitter usage: EDM.
The company took 1,000 EDM fans and 1,000 "general music" fans (see our notes at the bottom) and compared the two group's Twitter trends. Both sides tweeted more than the average user, but the EDM fan base did so at a drastically higher rate. The average Twitter uses posts 1.85 times a day, whereas EDM fans in the focus group tweeted 11 times a day.
That number doesn't mean anything to music industry folk unless it applies to the EDM scene, and here's where the findings get important: The electronic music fans tweeted about the genre on average once out of every three tweets. That's a 52 percent increase over the rate at which general music fans posted about their own favorite genre.
Those users also tweeted more about live events more than their cohorts in other genres. One in four music-based tweets came from a live event, according to the findings, which is a 30 percent higher rate than other music fans. Performers might complain about you having your cell phone out at a concert, but they might be the biggest benefactors.
"The EDM fan's amount of online sharing is simply staggering," said Martina Wang, the head of music marketing for Eventbrite. "They're the most social of music fans - both online and off. There's a huge opportunity for EDM brands to harness the power of the dance fan through connecting with them online."
Something to consider when looking at this data: As rock, hip-hop, and country fans probably thought to themselves, there's no way you can lump such diverse genres into one "general" group to compare to 1,000 fans of a singular genre. This doesn't mean Mashwork's findings are wrong, however things might not be as drastic as they seem.
