Big Boi: self-titled LP
Big Boi: Fell In The Sun
Whereas "Fell In The Sun" was a much stronger hip-hop flavor, "Lights On" has the feel of the Phantogram single. The duo dominate the production and the vocals as the Josh Carter crafts a brooding and spacey instrumental for Sarah Barthel's voice to gently float over.
Big Boi then takes control with a verse of his own to close out the track with a more collaborative Big Grams feel that fans are starting to understand.
The single selections released thus far are interesting choices to introduce fans to this new and exciting collaboration. They have yet to unveil any of their collabs with Skrillex and Run The Jewels, but "Lights On" and "Fell In The Sun" how diverse the album could be.
"It's a new project. It's not Phantogram; it's not Big Boi. It's a whole new idea," Barthel told Rolling Stone about the collaboration. "We wanted to have a time where we could not stress about the 'Phantogram sound' or collaborating on a hip-hop record. We wanted to experiment and have fun with it. The main focus of wanting to do this project was to do things that we wouldn't normally do anywhere else. This was a good platform for that because it's less judgmental to think about it in that way."
