tUnE-yArDs (a.k.a. Merrill Garbus), announced her upcoming album Nikki Nack by streaming a mix of the album's 13 tracks. The follow-up to 2011's w h o k i l l, the album features the new single "Water Fountain."
As Consequence of Sound points out, Garbus worked on her rhythmic training on a recent excursion to Haiti, and it's clear that the struggles of the people there left a mark on her lyrically. She sings, "Nothing feels like dying like the drying of my skin and lung while we just sit here while they watch us wither till we're gone."
Despite the heavy content matter, the song plays on a high-energy sound, full of percussion, giving it a lively feel.
The album is due out May 6 via 4AD Records with pre-orders currently ongoing. LP's purchased through 4AD's or tUnE-yArDs' sites will receive a limited edition 7-inch of "Water Fountain." The loop artist has also announced an extensive summer tour, which includes dates opening for Arcade Fire (who also spent time in Haiti) as well as stops at Sasquatch! Firefly and Forecastle music festivals.
