Nicki Minaj's relationship is real and she wants you to know it. When she spoke to GQ about boyfriend Meek Mill she asserted that they are "just like any other couple in the hood" and that "nothing we do is for TV." The hip-hop power couple did their first steamy photoshoot together for the magazine's October issue and it was quite the spread. The interview is coupled with plenty of candid moments and quotes from Minaj.
The first surprising comment from Minaj was, "Another thing people don't realize is I've had three boyfriends in my whole life. I've never dated around... I don't have a whole lot of experience in that department," she said (via Billboard). Based on the rapper's plethora of sex-fueled lyrics, seductive music videos and photos that circulate in the media one would think the complete opposite.
She also asserted that it is not the whirlwind relationship that the public thought it was, as reported by People. "Together, I think one of the biggest misconceptions at the beginning was that people thought that me and him just popped up out of the blue and were just in a relationship," she said to GQ, "We were friends for a very long time and he was someone that I was able to really confide in."
They may have gone public with their relationship fast, but Minaj explained that she struggled with the idea of being in the music business and not being able to do so in order to be more attractive to men. "When I came in the business, you couldn't tell people you were in a relationship, because record company and management said that doesn't make you appealing to men." She explained that things have really changed and that she felt comfortable to break out of that box.
She claimed that most activities are not industry-based saying, "We have fun together whether it's with famous people or not, we don't need to be around famous people to have fun." The couple do make frequent appearances in the public eye together though, displaying an intense physical connection in the music video for "All Eyes on You" and in the aforementioned photo shoot for GQ.
