In a shock move, The Full Monty is to end its West End run early and will close. The musical had gotten some good reviews and bagged an Olivier Award nomination, plus the previous musical theater incarnation of the hit film had been a success.
The shocked cast and the writer, Simon Beaufoy, have signed an online petition asking the producer, David Pugh, to let the run continue and give a new marketing campaign time to work.
In his comment below the petition, Beaufoy expresses his amazement that the show will end given the reactions he has had from press and from audiences. He also accuses Pugh of having "absented himself utterly from the West End run of the play."
Theater owners Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, Beaufoy reports, told him that the decision to close the show came from the producer.
