For better or worst, most every music nerd has probably come across one of Anthony Fantano's popular music vlogs under the name Needle Drop. Whether you like his content or not he certainly didn't deserve to have his face associated with the gunman who committed the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.
As Noisey reports, what started as a highly distasteful joke from Twitter and 4Chan, whose members noted the resemblance between Fantano and the gunman, ended up on SBS News; national program, posting a photo of Fantano from one of his videos alongside a quote from the gunman.
Fantano somberly responded to the news that he'd been mistaken for the gunman while off on a vacation of sorts out of town. In the style of his classic up close, off the cuff rants, Fantano expressed his remorse for the victims, the failings of the modern news media and anger at the Internet trolls that would purposely do this in a time of tragedy. Watch the clip below.
SBS news is an Australian-based news organization that covers news in the country but also around the world, so you would think they'd have the foresight to do a search on the photo and not just grab what ever they find on the Internet.
Those with opinions about anything on the Internet generally get a lot of flak, but some of the comments on Needle Drop's videos go pretty far. He gets criticized not only for his opinions on music but his spontaneous style of vlogging that tend to involve very long rants and yelling. But, that hasn't stopped the self described "Internet's busiest music nerd" from racking up over 500,000 subscribers on his channel.
Take a look at the SBS News program that ran with Fantano's face and don't get sucked into the trolling power of the Internet.
